Retirement is one of the biggest transitions in life – and being financially ready is only part of the picture. In this episode of the Wealth of Advice podcast, we explore not only the key financial steps you need to take, but also the emotional and psychological preparation that’s often overlooked.

In this post, we’ll walk through the key steps to take, common challenges to expect, and how to build a retirement that’s not just secure but fulfilling as well.  You can watch our podcast Retire Well with Wealth of Advice below for a more in depth look, or keep reading if you'd prefer a high-level overview.

Getting Your Finances in Shape

Before diving into the lifestyle side of retirement, it’s essential to ensure your financial foundations are solid.

1. Know What You Have

Make sure you have a clear understanding of:

  • Get updated pension values and projections.
  • Track down old pensions and consider consolidation.
  • Review other savings and investments.

2. Understand Your Income Needs

Start by tracking your current spending then ask:

  • What will change in retirement?
  • Will you need a lump sum to clear debt or for a new car, home improvements or a dream holiday?
  • Are you planning to spend more early on in retirement then scale back later?

Many people underestimate how much they’ll spend in the early “golden years” of retirement. Planning for a higher initial spend can help you enjoy those years without worry.

3. Build a Retirement Income Plan

Once you know your expenditure, match this to your income sources:

  • State Pension
  • Defined Benefit Pension
  • Defined Contribution Pensions
  • Other savings/investments or part-time work.

4. Think Long-Term

Retirement can last 30 years or more. Make sure your plan is built to last:

  • Consider inflation
  • Factor in unexpected costs
  • Make sure your wills and powers of attorney are in place, especially if you or your partner are financially dependent on each other

5. Don’t Overlook the State Pension

If you're planning to retire before your State Pension kicks in, check whether you need to top up your National Insurance contributions to maximise your entitlement.

Preparing Mentally for Retirement

Once you’ve sorted the numbers, it’s time to focus on the lifestyle shift.

1. Choose a Retirement Date

Setting a date makes things real. Will you stop working completely, or phase out gradually? In either case, can you make the most of final pension contributions before you go?

2. Plan Your Time

Retirement brings freedom – but it can also bring a lack of structure. May people struggle with:

  • Loss of routine
  • Lack of purpose
  • Guilt around spending their own money

Think about:

  • How you want to spend your days
  • Whether you’ll volunteer, travel, start a new hobby, or spend more time with family
  • Create a “bucket list” - you could use post-it notes to keep track of things you want to do leading up to retirement.

3. Plan as a Couple

If you and your partner are retiring at different times, talk about:

  • How you’ll spend your time
  • Whether one person’s pension can support both
  • How to align your goals and expectations

Retirement is a team effort, and communication is key.

4. Be Flexible

Retirement doesn’t have to be a hard stop. Many people:

  • Return to work part-time
  • Start a new business or passion project
  • Volunteer or study
  • Travel seasonally and work in between

The key is to design a retirement that works for you - not just financially, but emotionally too.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for retirement is about more than numbers. It’s about creating a life you’re excited to live. With the right planning, you can retire with confidence, purpose, and peace of mind.
